PETERBOROUGH, ONT.—The Canadian Canoe Museum (CCM) has announced that construction of its new facility in Peterborough, Ont. will begin this month following the purchase of property on Ashburnham Drive from the City of Peterborough.
Recently, the museum signed a CCDC 30 integrated project delivery contract with Chandos Construction and Lett Architects valued at $27.4 million. Design services and construction work will how proceed.
The sale was subject to a number of conditions including rezoning, project validation and confirmation of site appropriateness, all of which have been met to the satisfaction of both the museum and the city, stated a release. The museum paid $1.575 million for the five acres of land. The project is slated for completion in 2023.
CCM intends to sell its current property on Monaghan Road to help fund the project in addition to a fundraising campaign that has raised just over 82 per cent of the $40 million needed to complete the overall project.
“The Canadian Canoe Museum is thrilled to have completed these critical milestones so that we may commence with construction as planned in October,” said Carolyn Hyslop, executive director of the museum, in the release. “Our project team is working at lightning speed to stay on schedule so that we may be ready to open the new museum in 2023.”
The new museum will enable the museum to house 100 per cent of its collection in a building that meets Class A conservation standards, directly on the water, which allows for increased on-water and in-person programming, the statement said.
Project partners besides Chandos and Lett include LEA as structural engineer, Kelson Mechanical as mechanical trade partner,
DG Biddle & Associates undertaking mechanical and electrical engineering,
Lancer Electric and
Engage Engineering.
