Other cities have strict laws about disruptions to the public and public space. I've been told that in Tokyo, for example, all construction sites are enclosed and trucks enter and exit on a strictly controlled basis with no holding on nearby streets.

Re NYC, I always understood that the scaffolding was to protect the public space and to protect traffic and pedestrians form danger. I believe that materials delivered overnight have to be raised onto the scaffolding before (???) 6.00am and failure to do so attracts significant fines.
 
Nothing was actually rejected at TEYCC. Instead the staff report was accepted which requested that City staff oppose the development at the LPAT hearing and, also, that Council defers a decision on rental housing demolition.

So nothing changes until the LPAT hearing.

Great idea.

But, if you remember, the City stopped doing a lot of good stuff when David Miller was Mayor. He used to tell people "the City is not in the business of .... " Like many smoked-salmon and champagne socialists, he only got things half right.

Speaking of great things the City used to do, does anybody remember the boatbuilding course they used to do on Queens Quay?
 
The West Bend Community Association is organizing to oppose – or at least amend – the current proposal for the site.

It's some of the same folks who succeeded with building opposition to Giraffe over 10 years ago. Certainly in terms of homeownership, the immediate neighbourhood has not changed much, and UPX jacked property values even higher.

Note the imagery and "zoo" language from that earlier proposal, which, I mean, cute.

you cant be telling people that the 2-3 developments that have been proposed here were not good enough for the neighbourhood ....what bullshit

Right. There is no general community opposition to practically any development at this site. There are a small number of people opposed to anything happening that doesn't suit their image of what's appropriate. The councillor is not helpful in leading the discussion in any particular direction. The West Bend Community Association flyers around the neighbourhood might give the impression of general opposition but they have never consulted the community at large and are only representative of the very small number of people that attend their meetings.

The developer's architect (of the current proposal) has gone a long way in trying to make this development pedestrian friendly at the street level. In my opinion, he was successful.
