Any idea on why they used such a long set of straps for this heavy beam lift?

Is the crane a few tons within its lifting limit?

Say 4 cables at 4lbs/ft ~100’? = 1 ton of cable weight saved for the lift?
Edit. ~200’=2tons.

I can’t think of any other reason. Anyone?

...it's lifting something into place from a terrifying height near its footing as opposed to nearer the top. That alone will make it harder to gauge where that beam is supposed to go....but that probably doesn't answer your question though. So I am going to go with sway dampening here. That is, it acts a deterrent from poking holes into expensive glass or workers if it gets hit with a gust wind when lifting the thing into place.

Progress on the bridge.
