From the Saturday Globe:

Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children is preparing to launch the biggest fundraising campaign in the history of Canadian health care as it lays the groundwork for building a new clinical hospital of the future.

The project, which the Toronto institution’s president and chief executive officer, Dr. Michael Apkon, estimates will cost up to $1.6-billion, will turn to the public for the bulk of the $600-million Sick Kids will likely be expected to fund.
...

Sick Kids is ill-equipped for modern technology and a rapidly growing population. None of these problems were envisioned when the 1993-built atrium was constructed, let alone the 1949-built campus on University Avenue.

To make it happen, Sick Kids would demolish the out-of-use McMaster research building between its Peter Gilgan Centre and its atrium. There, it would erect a building designed for patient support and office space. That would enable Sick Kids to move its office operations out of its nearly 75-year-old building on the west side of the campus, demolish it in a second phase and build a new critical-care hospital for its cardiac, bone-marrow and neonatal units, opening space up in the atrium for less at-risk patient care.

By doing it in two stages, the most at-risk patients wouldn’t have to be displaced. Only a small amount of ambulatory care would be impacted for a short period of time, Dr. Apkon says.

Good to know this is in the planning stages.

Despite many significant infrastructure investments, as with transit, the list is long and much it urgent/overdue.

Princess Margaret is seriously overcapacity from what I hear; Scarborough General, in some wings 2 generations behind, The hospital in Grimsby is on its last legs too.

It would be nice if some of the most affluent Ontarians would contribute on a higher level to the infrastructure need.

Jim Pattison out in BC donated 75M to St. Paul's hospital.

His net worth is round 5B

The richest Ontario family is worth about 8x that number.

A comparable donation would therefore be... 600M

Just a thought.

Though it is a nice thought, I'd rather the government just taxed said individuals reasonably and paid for the infrastructure upgrades rather than leaving us to beg and rely on the charity of wealthy individuals. That's definitely not an ideal way to organize a society.

I'd be surprised if this doesn't attract some large donations. They've always come through with other developments. It's relatively peanuts when it comes to preserving your legacy.

I spent a year of my life in that hospital and don't regret a minute of it, as odd as that is to say. I loved the care there, it was exceptional. I will be donating for sure.

Would like it if there was a "Mary Pickford" auditorium or theatre included in the plans. See link. Not just a plaque.

The new Sick Kids should be rebuilt to incorporate new technologies, just like Bloorview.

And the Planning Rationale Report gives a hint of how future phases of renewal will work:

A little tough to make out, but it looks like KPMB might be looking at a similar bronze finish to that which they're proposing for 300 BSW.

Also, Urban Strategies seems to be doing everything these days.

Interesting. I could see most of the out-patient clinics and ambulatory services moving to the new Patient Support Centre, along with the administrative offices. But as far as I can recall, some of the ORs are are in the Gerrard (Hill) Wing. I could see it being a challenge having those in two separate buildings. I would also miss the original University Avenue lobby and Rotunda, but wouldn't otherwise miss the original University Wing or the Gerrard Wing.

Does anyone have access to the existing floor layouts?
