I got curious about how Toronto's construction boom compared to other booms around the world. So after a bit of research at SSP, I have come up with the following list of the top 25 cities with the most buildings currently under construction, 100 or more metres in height:

1. (86) Manila, Philippines
2. (64) Bangkok, Thailand
3. (51) Toronto, Canada
4. (50) Mumbai, India
5. (44) Istanbul, Turkey
6. (35) Abu Dhabi, UAE
7. (33) Dubai, UAE
7. (33) Tianjin, China
9. (30) Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
10. (25) Tokyo, Japan
11. (23) Panama, Panama
12. (22) Jakarta, Indonesia
13. (18) Shanghai, China
14. (17) Hong Kong, China
14. (17) Shenyang, China
16. (16) Hanoi, Vietnam
16. (16) Singapore
18. (15) Moscow, Russia
18. (15) New York, USA
18. (15) Seoul, South Korea
21. (14) Mexico City, Mexico
22. (13) Taipei, Taiwan
23. (12) Dalian, China
24. (11) London, England
25. (10) Chongqing, China
25. (10) Melbourne, Australia

This list takes no account of how much over 100m in height the buildings are, 110m counts just as much as 510m. But it is clear that Toronto is one of the top cities in the world right now, in terms of high-rise construction activity.

edit -- added Istanbul, Turkey, which I had somehow missed

Nice work, Mongo...I wonder what the list would look like as we increase the sizes...i.e. having a similar list for 500+ feet, then 600+, etc...?

I'm also surprised with the activity in Manila...I knew there's activity there, but I had no idea this much...

What I find to be the most interesting thing about that list is that Toronto has double the amount of the next nearest city in a developed country.

Thank for putting this together.
For some cities it may be safe to assume there may not be a complete list of all buildings > 100m (such as cities in China, specifically).

But even with that consideration, the size of Toronto's construction is quite impressive as as vegeta_skyline noted - compared to any other city in a developed country, it's especially so.

And the scary thing is that given the huge backlog of proposals (we have been averaging how many new 100m+ proposals a month, recently?), I fully expect that number to climb significantly in the coming months and years.

Oh, and that 51 100m+ buildings under construction does not include Mississauga (6 100m+ buildings of their own).

Here is the same list, for 150m+ buildings currently under construction, by city:

1. (40) Mumbai, India
2. (30) Tianjin, China
3. (25) Abu Dhabi, UAE
3. (25) Dubai, UAE
3. (25) Manila, Philippines
6. (20) Bangkok, Thailand
7. (17) Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
7. (17) Toronto, Canada
9. (16) Istanbul, Turkey
10. (15) Shenyang, China
11. (14) Panama, Panama
12. (12) Seoul, South Korea
12. (12) Shanghai, China
14. (11) Dalian, China
15. (10) Hefei, China
15. (10) Tokyo, Japan
17. (9) Chongqing, China
17. (9) Guangzhou, China
17. (9) Hanoi, Vietnam
17. (9) Moscow, Russia
17. (9) New York, USA
17. (9) Singapore
23. (8) Goyang, South Korea
23. (8) Jakarta, Indonesia
23. (8) London, UK
23. (8) Shenzhen, China
23. (8) Taipei, Taiwan
28. (7) Chengdu, China
29. (6) Wuxi, China
30. (5) Busan, South Korea
30. (5) Hanzhou, China
30. (5) Mexico City, Mexico
30. (5) Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
30. (5) Wuhan, China

Toronto has slipped down the list, as expected, to a tie for #7, but still dominates the developed world.

This is a reminder that Canada has to partner more closely with Asia and less with the sinking ship to the south.

Here are the top cities for 200m+ construction. Toronto has fallen further into a tie for 9th place, but still beats out the nearest developed-world competitor, New York. Fully half (15 out of 30) of the cities on this list are in China.

1. (20) Abu Dhabi, UAE
1. (20) Tianjin, China
3. (18) Dubai, UAE
4. (16) Mumbai, India
5. (13) Shenyang, China
6. (10) Panama, Panama
7. (9) Chongqing, China
7. (9) Dalian, China
9. (8) Goyang, South Korea
9. (8) Shanghai, China
9. (8) Shenzhen, China
9. (8) Toronto, Canada
13. (7) Chengdu, China
14. (6) Guangzhou, China
14. (6) Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
14. (6) Manila, Philippines
14. (6) New York, USA
14. (6) Singapore
19. (5) Hangzhou, China

24. (4) Hanoi, Vietnam

24. (4) Mecca, Saudi Arabia
24. (4) Nanjing, China
24. (4) Nanning, China
24. (4) Seoul, South Korea
24. (4) Xiamen, China

It may take 6 years to construct a 200m tower in Toronto, while 2-3 years in Shanghai. so "buildings under construction" means not so much. What's more important is how many buildings over 100m/200m have been completed during the past 5 years, or how many new construction started every year.

Here is the list for 250m+ buildings. Toronto has dropped further to a tie for 18th place, while New York takes its place at the top of the developed world.

I'm not sure, but I think for 100m+ that Mississauga almost makes the list on its own, with 9 buildings going right now (2*Absolute, 2*Limelight, 2*Pinnacle, 3*Parkside) and at least 2 more starting soon (2*Uptown, more Parkside).

Parkside alone might end up having 5 buildings going up at one time. Isn't there a big condo going along the east part of Lakeshore also, or is that in the Etobicoke?

SSP has only 6 buildings over 100m going up in Mississauga. Absolute South appears to be off the list, and the Limelight buildings are under 100m.
