Shovels should be going in the ground any day now (if they already haven't) to start work on phase 1 of "Lisgar Park". Groundbreaking was Saturday, May 24. I put the name in quotes as an official name for the new park has not yet been chosen. Councillor Ana Bailão, who emceed the groundbreaking, is running a naming contest. Below are shots from the event along boards showing images of what's to come.

To the south of the park is Edge on Triangle Park condos which will include the Toronto Media Arts Centre in its base. Six agencies will be in there, and along with the growing residential population of the area, will provide lots of animation for the space here.

From two days ago. Lots of concrete forms to create pathways, ramps, niches, etc.

From a few hours ago. It's coming together, with the wood posts—painted dark gray, blue, and red—really helping define the space. Looking forward to seeing the final effect.

Very interested to see the finished product, my first impression after a site visit was that it's way over designed beyond and we will probably end up with a similar situation as June Callwood park, but hoping it's not the case.

Yup, these new artsy-fartsy parks being developed now-a-days are all directed to a certain crowd,
.. i sure wouldnt take my kids there, oh well maybe my dog

Gee, do they even install public drinking water fountains anymore??

At least the renderings seem to show places where more than 2 people can sit together. That alone is an improvement over June Callwood

What's the point when a few moths after they build them, they are broken or turned off? For some reason Toronto has a very hard time keeping its drinking fountains working, yet other smaller, poorer cities have no problem with it. Go to Buffalo or even Detroit and they seem to be able to keep their drinking fountains working.

I'd take this over the unkempt natural looking parks peppered throughout the city...

There's something about an overdesigned yet unpopular park that reeks of failure. I appreciate novelty and risk taking to achieve greatness, but there are many successful public spaces in Toronto and around the world to learn from before creating a landscape plan.

Is there any indication that this park has been planned without referring to precedents first?
