Nope, just not even remotely accurate or fair of a statement to make.
There were a variety of styles behind the iron curtain, and reducing the entire architectural legacy of most of a continent through the 20th century to "commie blocks" is just plain wrong.

These are buildings that were made to be landmarks

this discussion is about these residential buildings - which were the pinnacle of ugliness in Soviet times

are we just going to ignore the hundreds of concrete apartment blocks around our own city..? It was more of a worldwide architectural trend at the time than anything else

You said nothing about residential buildings until this post. You just made a blanket statement that was not true.
