Yah, but short-turning at Laird rather than Don Mills diminishes the importance of Eglint0n-DonMills as a future interchange station.

It'll be 25 years before this could possibly be an issue.

If the DRL is ever built and reaches Eglinton, would it be a significant expense to bury this chunk of the LRT, given that Laird and Don Mills stations are both already underground? It might make sense to grade-separate it once it connects to a subway.

Or a south-side alignment...

(or how many times have we heard that on UT  )

Wasnt the 2012 estimate for the Pape to University stretch about 2.8 billion? With smarttrack now likely to be built, it could canabalize the scarborough subway extension which is just about the same cost of that 2012 estimate for RL phase 1, and hence the RL is not so buried afterall.

If you think the Scarborough subway won't be built I have a bridge in India to sell you.

With the $8 billion marked for SmartTrack, ~$4B marked for the Scarborough Subway... we could have probably built the Sheppard extension, DRL, refurbished SRT, and possibly even have Eglinton East elevated.

If council had agreed to go with the Ford/McGuity plan, we'd probably be onto funding the DRL right now since it would've been a less touchy issue with the LRTs off the tables and Sheppard subway funded. Everyone downtown/in Scarborough would have been happy.

Now we get some weird hybrid compromise plan... with LRT, RER, and a replacement subway.

But back 3.5 years ago, City Council said it was worth whatever cost necessary to knock Ford off his pedestal. Who knows, maybe if Ford did not get stabbed in the back by Stintz and defeated by Council in January 2012, he may not have gone on those drinking and drug binges. So now we are left to pay the Billions of dollars that are the follow-up to those Council decisions from early 2012.

The Ford/McGuity plan did not have Sheppard subway funded.

According to that plan, Ford promised to find private funding for Sheppard subway. Once he failed to secure such funding, the council rebelled and Ford effectively lost control of the transit file.

I am sure his binges are all Stintz's fault. Her civic duty was to babysit the Mayor, and she neglected that duty :)

Nobody stabbed Rob Ford in the back. He stumbled onto his own sword. Probably while in a drunken stupor.

I always thought that they should have proposed a tax to build both the Sheppard Line and DRL simultaneously (and yes, we could have afforded it since that's how much we're spending on SmartTrack+SSE now). It was the only way to possible have everyone on one page. Too bad both sides weren't able to compromise.

I see you have added to your Ford fantasy life -- now council made him do drugs!

Again, Ford has no one to blame but himself for not bringing his McGuinty deal to council in 2011, and it would have passed. His incredible stupidity and arrogance is 100% responsible for losing control of the transit file, not council.

Nobody is saying that Ford did not bungle the transit file. But it is undeniable that Council chose the path that we are currently on (egged on by the Provinical government) - not Ford. Council even proudly announced in 2012 that they took the transit file away from Ford. (in 2013, they took the rest of the powers away from him).
