Ikea is inching forward on its plans to build a new customer distribution centre in Hamilton.
The multinational company has submitted a building permit application to the city for its planned Glover Road facility, Ikea Canada public relations leader Alicia Carroll told The Spectator.
Upon approval from the city, the company is looking to start construction on the facility this spring, with an anticipated opening in summer 2027, Carroll noted.
The latest news on the project comes more than two years after Ikea confirmed it had purchased 65 acres of land in rural Hamilton for $82 million, and more than a year after the company officially announced its plans for the property at 212 Glover Rd.
The Swedish ready-to-assemble furniture company previously noted the new facility will support its expansion throughout southwestern Ontario.
The site is part of a plan that will see the company spend more than $400 million on projects aimed at expanding its fulfilment capabilities in the Greater Vancouver and Toronto areas.
“We are transforming and developing our fulfilment network … to ensure that our products are available for customers whenever, wherever, and however they choose to shop with us,” Carroll said in an email.
The new facility in Hamilton will replace the existing distribution centre in Mississauga, Carroll noted.
