The rather pleasant tones of green are based on sampled colours from a Monet painting… but I can imagine that they could have been found in an Emily Carr or Arthur Lismer painting as well, either of which would have been a little more apt, but hey, three cheers for the thought being put into the colouration of the cladding!

This project is in the Capital Budget (as one would expect); the projected spend gives an indication on timelines.

Fieldhouse Budget, 5M and change, over this year and next

Phase 2 of the park, mainly cashflows in 2023-2026. Total budget 8.7M

The Recreation Centre is listed separately from the park, here:

Total budget 38M

Of note, the spending shows as complete by end of next year, so probably a late 2022 opening.

Has the skating rink been replaced with the skating trail in this design? No more shinny?
There is supposed to be a smaller shinny pad with removable boards so it can convert into a basketball court in warmer weather. Based on that I assume the shinny pad is not much bigger than a single basketball court.

Unfortunate but thanks for the info

Park Improvements

The improvements to Wallace Emerson Park are a combination of renovating the existing park, a land swap, and an expansion of new parkland. Overall, the park will increase in size from 2.66 ha (6.58 acres) to 3.16 ha (7.81 acres) and will be delivered in two phases. Phase two will be delivered separately after the completion of phase one.
Partial closure of the park will be required during the construction of the first phase. The following amenities located on the west side of the park will not be available for use: basketball court, drinking fountain, BMX Park, and walkway connection to Floyd Street. The existing multi-purpose field will be reduced in size in order for it to be available for use during construction.
The first phase of the park improvements will open at the same time as the new Community Recreation Centre and will feature:

  • A new fieldhouse which will include
    • A snack bar and kitchen
    • A skate sharpening station
    • A changing area, gender-neutral and universal washrooms
    • Storage spaces
    • Refrigeration and ice resurfacing utility spaces to service the outdoor ice skating facility
  • Refrigerated ice skating facility
  • Multi-purpose court with basketball hoops

  • Splash pad
  • New landscaping and plantings with preservation of some of the existing mature trees
