A new year means a new list with hundreds of developments around the world approaching completion. In Calgary, several projects are reaching that point, including WAM Development Group's 10th Avenue SW, which is now topping out.
The project consists of two towers rising to 34 and 17 storeys at the corner of 10th Avenue SW and 9th Street SW. The shorter east tower was the first to reach its apex, followed now by the taller tower to the west. The 425,000-square-foot project contains 440 residential rental units complemented by 7,200 square feet of retail on the first two floors.
Photos captured by Surrealplaces show the project in its current form. Most of its concrete skeleton remains bare, awaiting the black cladding and spandrel accents which have begun installation on the lower floors of the west tower.
The development is located within one of Calgary's most sought after neighbourhoods, the Beltline. Sometimes considered to be an extension of the downtown core, the urban and dense Beltline owes its prosperity to the numerous restaurants, bars, and retail outlets that make the area a round-the-clock destination.
The neighbourhood has been selected by the City of Calgary as a targeted area for growth, with hopes of accommodating an additional 40,000 people by 2035. The Beltline Area Redevelopment Plan seeks to build upon the neighbourhood's successful integration of residential and commercial space by promoting density. As a result, the Beltline is experiencing huge growth, with projects like Mark on 10th, located just beside 10th Avenue SW, providing new homes for the influx of residents.
While developments continue to sprout up within the Beltline area, 10th Avenue SW is expected to begin occupancy later this year.
