After CTBUH announced last week that there are now officially 100 completed supertall buildings (300+ metres) in the world, the organization is following up with a report stating that the year 2015 saw a record-breaking number of buildings of 200 metres in height or greater completed around the world. Indeed, 106 of these skyscrapers were finished last year, against a previous record of 99 in 2014. This brings the number of 200-metre-plus buildings in the world to 1,040, marking a 392% increase from the year 2000, when only 265 existed.

The report indicates that the tallest building completed in 2015 was the Shanghai Tower, now the tallest building in China and the second-tallest in the world, with a height of 632 metres. The second-tallest building completed last year was New York City's 432 Park Avenue, which has become the tallest all-residential building in the world. The Rafael Vinoly Architects and SLCE Architects-designed edifice also became the world’s 100th supertall building.

Out of the 106 skyscrapers of at least 200 metres in height that were completed in 2015, 81 were located in Asia (excluding the Middle East) with 62 of these in China, who has taken the top spot on the list for the eighth consecutive year. The Middle East arrives in second position with nine 200+ metre buildings completed in 2015, followed by Europe (8), Central America (7), North America (3), and Australia (1). 52 of these towers are primarily office space, 30 are mixed-use, 20 are residential buildings, and 4 are hotels.
