Melbourne's building boom has resulted in a significant number of highrises being built within and around the city's financial district. While many streets in Southbank have been dramatically transformed over the past few years, a new skyscraping tower currently known as 258 City Road will soon add its soaring silhouette to the growing City Road cluster. The site, developed by Altus Development, is situated immediately adjacent to the yet-to-be completed Verge Apartments.
Designed by Moull Murray Architects, the project was recently approved by the City at 62 floors, with the tower rising 193 metres above street level. While the initial two floors of the building will be dedicated to retail and meeting rooms, the remaining part of the tower will feature a mix of residential units, with a total of 453 dwellings. 130 one- and two-bedroom serviced apartments operated by Pan Pacific Hotels Group will occupy the first 18 levels of the building, and another 323 private but similarly laid out units will take up the floors above that. The upper 12 floors will boast a series of three-bedroom penthouses.
The building appears to be wrapped with a highly reflective blue glass facade, with parts of the upper floors covered in a darker glass, adding a sloped detail to the building's crown. The future 600 residents will enjoy a wide array of amenities, such as a gym, private movie theatre, health spa, and an outdoor entertainment space equipped with barbecues. The proximity of the tramway line and the presence of 216 bike stalls — compared to 86 car spaces — will help promote an urban and active life style.
