Boston's Avalon North Station has joined the growing list of residential projects being built adjacent to downtown hockey arenas. With these sporting complexes already acting as a hub for entertainment, it has become increasingly popular to locate new residential developments in the immediate area, as is the case for Toronto's Maple Leaf Square, Montreal's Tour des Canadiens, and Vancouver's Aquilini Centre.
Developed by Avalonbay Communities Inc., the 38-storey luxury apartment building will be one of the tallest new towers to be completed in the Massachusetts capital. Rising to a height of 127 metres — or 415 feet — the building includes 503 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment units.
The tower houses a number of amenities catering to residents, including a fitness centre and rooftop terrace. Residents and the public will also have access to a pedestrian arcade between Nashua Street and Causeway Street. The arcade will be lined with retail and restaurants, further enhancing an already vibrant area of the city.
Forum contributor Hub recently posted fresh updates showing the building in its current state, which had its official topping out ceremony during the first week of December. Cladding is now catching up to fully seal the CBT Architects-designed structure.
The $250 million project features direct access to Boston's North Station, one of two transportation hubs providing Amtrak and MBTA Commuter Rail service. Occupancy is expected to begin late in 2016.
Though Avalonbay has redeveloped a large parcel of land, there's still plenty of development potential surrounding the arena. Boston Properties and Delaware North have unveiled renderings for their Boston Garden project, which would see another three towers offering residential, hotel, and office uses if built according to the current plans.
