The corner of 5th Avenue and Church Street in Nashville is about to become a whole lot denser. Construction has begun on a 45-storey residential tower that will top out at 166 metres (543 feet) — high enough to become the Music City's second tallest tower after the AT&T Building.

Named after its address, 505 is being built by Giarratana Development, which has partnered with the Metropolitan Development & Housing Agency (MDHA) to bring the glassy tower out of the concept stage and into reality. A rooftop amenity deck will be placed atop an MDHA parking garage, providing an outdoor terrace for the over 500 units in the building. The upper 200 units are expected to be sold as condominiums, while the remaining portion will be apartments.

Featuring a design by Solomon Cordwell Buenz, the tower will also contain two 800-square-foot retail spaces and a large restaurant. According to the project's webcam which shows a deep excavated pit where the tower will rise, construction on the development has started. The adjacent parking garage is now reaching ground level. The $169 million project should be ready for occupancy by the last quarter of 2017.
