Just a week after the first signs of stainless steel cladding appeared on Rogers Place, a major announcement yesterday has put the ICE District at the top of news headlines again. Katz Group Properties and WAM Development Group, who together comprise ICE District Properties, have secured an agreement that will see Edmonton's first JW Marriott Hotel

The luxury hotel will occupy the first 22 floors of a new 54-storey tower at 104 Avenue and 102 Street. Originally proposed as a Delta Hotel, the chain was acquired by Marriott last year, a merger which created Canada's largest hotel company. Set to contain 356 rooms, over 25,000 square feet of modern conference facilities, a 10,000-square-foot ballroom, Spa by JW, and an eatery operated by Oliver and Bonacini Restaurants, the JW Marriott will become only the third such establishment in the country after Ontario's The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa and an additional location planned for Parq Vancouver Urban Resort

"The new JW Marriott property will provide guests with enriching luxury in the heart of downtown Edmonton," said Don Cleary, President of Marriott Hotels of Canada. "As the largest hotelier in Canada, the opening of JW Marriott Edmonton in ICE District speaks to our continued commitment to providing choices to Canadian customers and the confidence we have in the success of this incredible venture. The hotel will perfectly complement Edmonton's evolving downtown and tourist landscape. Marriott is proud to work with ICE District to bring the JW Marriott brand's stellar service and unsurpassed guest experiences to this market."

Situated atop the hotel from floors 23 to 54, The Legends Private Residences will contain 264 condominium suites. Steps away from Rogers Place, Stantec Tower, Edmonton Civic Tower, and what will be one of Edmonton's most vibrant public spaces, the building features a sleek design from Hariri Pontarini Architects. Construction has started and a massive pit marks the location in which the tower will rise. The development is expected to be complete in 2018.
