Chicago's affluent Gold Coast Historic District is home to many large mansions and luxurious residences, including new developments like 4 East Elm, a boutique condominium quickly approaching completion. In one of America's wealthiest neighbourhoods, any remaining neighbourhood real estate is extremely valuable, so developers are building ultra-luxury homes featuring some of the country's priciest units. A new project on Walton Street is just beginning construction, and with an average unit size of a whopping 4,000 square feet, it promises to deliver lavish living to its residents.

By JDL Development, the 35-storey No. 9 Walton only contains 67 units, a true testament to their spaciousness. The two- and five-bedroom suites feature private terraces and ceiling heights stretching up to 12 feet. A two-storey penthouse with a wraparound terrace sizes in at 11,600 square feet and is selling in excess of $12 million.

Residents will have plenty of amenities to enjoy, including a lap pool, sauna, steam room, fitness centre, wine cellar, private dining room, two guest suites, and a covered dog run. There will be retail on the first two floors of the building and parking facilities will be located underground.

The ornate tower takes on an appearance similar to the 60-storey Waldorf Astoria located just across the street. Designed by Hartshorne + Plunkard Architects, the stately building will be clad in limestone, granite, and glass. Photos taken by Forum contributor harryc, show that construction has begun and heavy equipment can be seen excavating the site. The building is expected to be completed by summer 2017.
