A new elliptical arena is readying for a spring opening in the heat of the desert sun. Located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, the $375 million (USD) T-Mobile Arena will play host to a wide range of events, including concerts, boxing, mixed martial arts, and basketball.
Communications giant T-Mobile purchased the naming rights for the complex before an official announcement was made in January. MGM Resorts and Anschutz Entertainment Group are spearheading the development in a joint venture, bringing on notable stadia design firm Populous as the architects. The 20,000-seat venue will lie adjacent to a new $100 million shopping district between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo casino and hotel complexes.
Construction has been steady following the ground breaking in May of 2014. The final steel beam was erected in May 2015, officially topping out the structure. With an opening concert by The Killers scheduled for April 6, 2016, exterior and interior work continues quickly. Two webcams hosted on ArenaLasVegas.com capture this progress. The scoreboard lies on the bowl floor for now, awaiting hoisting, as the seating takes shape on the periphery.
An LED overlay has been attached to the glass facade. Balconies overlooking Park Avenue are joined by an outdoor performance stage that will add even more excitement to the area. A solid orange-coloured skin reflects the arena's desert surroundings, its undulating metal mimicking the mountains nearby.
Numerous events have already been scheduled for the arena's 2016 program, including concerts by Janet Jackson, Guns N' Roses, and the Dixie Chicks. It could also serve as an impetus for a future National Hockey League team, as Las Vegas has been frequently touted as a site for possible expansion.
