The developer behind the world's tallest building is now looking to eclipse that tower with an even taller structure in Dubai. The government-backed Emaar Properties has said the new tower would be "a notch" taller than the 828-metre Burj Khalifa, and it would be decorated with rotating balconies and landscaping inspired by the hanging gardens of Babylon.

The cable-supported spire would contain numerous garden observation decks, a boutique hotel, and several restaurants. Designed by famed architect Santiago Calatrava, the tower would be located at the nucleus of a new six-square-kilometre development near Dubai Creek, a saltwater creek situated near a protected wildlife sanctuary.

Emaar has likened the proposed structure to a 21st century Eiffel Tower that would attract not only tourists, but homebuyers who would pay a premium for nearby apartments with great views. That was the concept behind the Burj Khalifa, which is now surrounded by multiple residential and hotel buildings. Emaar is aiming to open the structure in 2020, just in time for the World Expo

Though the new tower would indeed surpass the height of the current world's tallest, it would likely measure up just short of the under-construction Jeddah Tower, which will soon become the tallest structure on the planet. That project is also scheduled for a 2020 completion date.
