Developers, architects, and other notables were on hand just before the American Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate the topping off of 45 East 22nd, the latest condo tower development to grace the New York skyline from the heart of Manhattan's famed Flatiron District.

Standing 777 feet tall, the 65-storey condo tower designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates for the Continuum Company, has reached its final height.

Captured from the 65th floor, the views from atop 45 East 22nd offer a spectacular panorama of the Manhattan skyline.

The tallest structure between Downtown (above) and Midtown (below), 45 East 22nd is truly a pioneer in terms of height within the surrounding Flatiron District. The neighbourhood has traditionally been home to a collection of much shorter structures, including, of course, the area's eponymous Flatiron Building, which can be found just down the street.

Rising from the site of a former five-storey walk-up apartment and restaurant, the top-heavy modern glass tower will sit atop a more traditional masonry-clad podium that is wedged between two historic structures.

Seen above and below, the tower will soar above its neighbours, with the more reserved podium facade helping to ease the tower's transition to street level, as its traditional materiality helps relate this new development to its surroundings.

Compared to the above renderings, the most recent images taken at the site reveal just how true to form the structure's progress has been, as the tower quickly becomes a neighbourhood fixture.

Seen above, the development's elegant transition from its surrounding urban context to far above the height of its neighbours is made possible by the tower's gentle expansion as it clears the confines of its narrow base. Seen below, the podium level has yet to attain its signature masonry cladding, with the structure's final touches still some months away.

Above and beyond the usual mix of building amenities, 45 East 22nd will provide the occupants of its 83 residences with a full five floors of amenities. This impressive array will include a fitness centre with boxing and a private training suite, a basketball court, a golf simulator, a library, a children's playroom, billiards, a cards room, a terrace with an outdoor grill, along with two entertainment spaces including the Upper Club and Courtyard on the level 54.

Once completed later this year, 45 East 22nd will complement the surrounding Flatiron District, an area of Manhattan which is quickly becoming a haven for the city's ever-increasing density. Seen in the rendering below, the completed structure sits in context with the Flatiron Building, while the former's swooping sculpted glass exterior playing nicely off the signature wedge shape of the latter.
