It has been a couple months since we last visited the upcoming 'urban resort' known as Parq Vancouver, developed as a joint venture between Paragon Development, Dundee Corporation, and PBC VUR Limited Partnership. Strategically positioned next to BC Place, which played host to the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, the 800,000-square-foot casino and hotel complex has received its first cladding panels.
Designed by ARCOP + acdf and IBI/HB Architects, the bronze-coloured glazing closely matches what was depicted in the project renderings. The luminescence of the reflective panels changes according to the viewer's positioning and perspective, with protruding white fins adding some texture to the curtain wall facade of the multifaceted facility. Most of the concrete shell for the shared podium is complete, from which three towers will erupt.
The complex will provide a contemporary home for the Edgewater Casino and host approximately 600 slots, 75 table games, 60,000 square feet of convention and meeting space, five restaurants, three bars, and a fitness area all contained within a LEED Gold-certified structure.
A significant hotel component — 517 rooms across two distinct brands — is also included in the project. JW Marriott will operate the bulk of the rooms, while the remaining suites will belong to a signature hotel called The Douglas. When completed in early 2017, guests will be tempted by the 30,000-square-foot rooftop 'parq' that features flexible event and leisure space, an urban forest, and integrated restaurants and lifestyle amenities.
