Portland's Pearl District, a large swath of land in the northwest of Oregon's largest municipality, is an exercise in urban reincarnation. What was once a corner of the city devoted to industrial uses and transportation has been transformed into a mixed-use neighbourhood of contemporary residences, expansive offices, and successful shops and restaurants.
The southern end of the Pearl is populated by a collection of preserved brick warehouse facades and residential developments that have attempted to blend in with the previously established human-scaled streetscape. To the north, the City of Portland relaxed zoning laws to eliminate maximum height restrictions for buildings with narrow floor plates. That instrumental change in planning regulations birthed the 104-metre (340-foot) Cosmopolitan on the Park condominium by Hoyt Street Properties and Bora Architects.
The 28-storey development is the highrise cornerstone of the Pearl District. The eighth tallest building in Portland includes 150 residences and plenty of ground-level retail to pump even more life onto the street. Residents are afforded sweeping city, river, and mountain views courtesy of the smooth expanses of glass enveloping the tower. Facade insets running along the length of the building indicate the presence of recessed balconies.
Residents will be pampered with an envious assemblage of amenities that includes a fully appointed fitness centre, community room with fireplace and wine bar, and an outdoor terrace highlighted by lush landscaping. For residents wanting to host their family and friends, a private entertainment facility and three guest suites await. Occupants are now receiving their keys to the latest palpable testament of the neighbourhood's newfound vibrancy.
