While news of Donald Trump's presidential victory continues to reverberate across the globe, there has been comparatively little mention of the outgoing President Obama's plans post-Commander-in-Chief. He and his family are currently undecided as to where they will settle once they turn over the keys to the White House. While early speculators focused on a possible return to their stately red-brick mansion in Barrack and Michelle Obama's beloved Chicago, more recent reports suggest a move to a private residence in either Manhattan or Washington D.C., and the Obama's recently purchased an historic Tudor-style home in the latter. This edition of Throwback Thursday will take a look back at the Obama's private residence located in the heart of Chicago's wealthy Hyde Park, miles away from the President's former South Side stomping grounds, and far removed over space and time from the home where the First Family now resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Purchased by Obama in 2005 for a reported $1.65 million, the stately red brick estate in Hyde Park was more than enough for the Harvard-educated attorney-turned-Senator. The 6,200-square-foot historic mansion is beautifully appointed with period details and more rooms than a family of four would ever need... That is, of course, until the current First Family moved to Washington D.C. following Obama's historic election in 2008. Virtually overnight, the President's former home became ground zero for the high level of around-the-clock security and Secret Services protection that comes with being President. While the absentee Obama's neighbours have put up with cement barriers, constant police presence, and the spectacular foliage growth that has since all but concealed the First Home from view, local NIMBYs can rest assured that the days are numbered for the Presidential treatment, as Obama will leave office in less than two months' time.
While 5046 S Greenwood Avenue has served as the Obama's home away from home now for almost eight consecutive years, it is speculated that it will not be long before the house returns to the market. For those looking to snap a selfie beside the famous address while it is still owned by a sitting President, the related website warns you not to get too close, and to not, under any circumstance, attempt to go inside. For while the security is nothing like the White House, it would not be a good idea to attempt to ring the doorbell — at least not until next year!
