The defunct master plan for New York City's Riverside Center is being resuscitated by General Investment and Development Companies (GID), who is bringing together some of the world's most notable architecture firms to fulfill a new three-tower mandate called Waterline Square. The five-acre Upper West Side property will feature distinct residential designs carefully crafted by Richard Meier and Partners Architects, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, and Rafael Viñoly Architects.

Christian de Portzamparc developed a master plan for the Riverside Center development, partnering with Extell Development on the five-building scheme. Beset by difficulties and uncertainty, with Christian de Portzamparc unceremoniously dropped from the project, Extell eventually sold individual parcels of the site to GID for a cool $676 million. The never-built complex did however spawn two offspring in One West End Avenue and 21 West End Avenue.

Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates — which had previously been tapped to design a tower under the Extell plan — has taken the reins for Two Waterline Square. Richard Meier is designing One Waterline Square and Raphael Viñoly will handle Three Waterline Square. According to the renderings and newly launched website, the three buildings will be glazed in high-quality curtain wall. Canted rooflines are envisioned for each tower, which will host one- to five-bedroom condominiums above lower-level rentals.

Construction of the development began in 2015 and, in addition to the expansive residential component, will contain approximately 100,000 square feet of recreational and lifestyle amenities. The development should come online in 2018 following an anticipated start of sales in 2017.
