The 44-storey Zaha Hadid-designed Generali Tower in Milan is readying to open its doors to the titular insurance company's 3,000 staff in 2018. The twisting skyscraper — which orients its upper floors to face Milan's Duomo cathedral — is part of the three-tower mixed-use development CityLife, which just opened up its sprawling 32,000-square-metre shopping district.

The shopping centre, located above a station on the M5 line of the metro system, is finished in warm engineered bamboo flooring, ceiling and columns. When the entire CityLife development completes in 2020, the shopping complex is estimated to welcome approximately seven million visitors every year.

One of Europe's largest redevelopment projects, CityLife will contain 1,000 new homes, offices for nearly 10,000 staff, a 42-acre park, and multiple public spaces. The 90-acre redevelopment enlivens the city's old trade fair grounds and opens up the site to year-round use.
