The city that birthed the modern skyscraper is closer to adding another supertall to its ranks as the Chicago Plan Commission voted unanimously in favour of the 308-metre-tall One Chicago Square. Sited across the road from Holy Name Cathedral at State Street and Chicago Avenue, the complex envisions a pair of towers 76 and 49 storeys in scope.

JDL Development has retained Goettsch Partners and Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture on the skyscrapers, the highest of which would become the sixth-tallest in the city. Under the plan submitted to the Commission, One Chicago Square will contain up to 869 rental and condominium units. A sizeable podium would also include commercial office space, a health club, and retailers.

The massing of the towers has changed somewhat since the scheme was introduced in October. The shortest tower has been endowed with a considerable height increase, the tallest tower has been further defined by additional setbacks, and the podium has been reworked.

The project would come with a $13.2 million contribution to Chicago's Neighborhood Opportunity Bonus system and a further $11.37 million to the city's affordable housing fund. Investments to ease gridlock along Chicago Avenue, a point of contention among some local members of the community, will also be made. The development will head to council later this year and could break ground before 2018 comes to a close.
