The 1987-established Zhejiang World Trade Center in Hangzhou is due for a makeover, and Hong Kong-based Leigh & Orange Architects has been tasked with the job. The venue was originally designed to facilitate foreign trade during the early years of the Chinese economic reforms, and the contemporary scheme for the aging complex seeks to inject the business community with a new commercial catalyst.

The construction area will cover nearly 80,000 square metres of the Huanglong financial district, including almost 25,000 square metres of new commercial spaces. The project would be primarily located underground, with basement retail connected to the metro.

Kelvin Li, L&O’s Project Director said: "L&O is honoured to be working on what is a very prominent scheme which will help shape the future of Hangzhou's Huanglong district," said Kelvin Li, Leigh & Orange's Project Director. "With the upcoming 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, we hope to work hand-in-hand with Hangzhou Metro to transform this into a world class mixed-used facility."

A "retail park" forms the crux of the design, featuring commercial spaces intertwined with an indoor sports-themed arcade and an outdoor trail. A sports-themed concept store and a major flagship bookstore will anchor the retail complex.

Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2018 with completion anticipated in 2021. Additional images and information can be found in the Database file linked below.
