Global architectural practice Benoy has been handed the reins to conceptualize a mixed-use destination in Nanjing on the banks of the Yangtze River. Developer MCC Real Estate Group has engaged the firm to regenerate a historic ice storage warehouse as part of a larger masterplanned scheme for the area.

Benoy aims to convert the former cold storage warehouse, constructed in 1915, into the centrepiece of a new commercial and cultural precinct that evokes the area's industrial heritage through design.

The form of the original historical buildings will be maintained and act as complements to a number of modern blocks, that together, will create a central public plaza. Benoy was also cognizant of preserving local views of the historical structures when determining the placement of the new buildings.

"We are incredibly excited to be working on this significant industrial regeneration project which will become one of the largest commercial developments in the area once completed," said Qin Pang, Director at Benoy. "As designers, how we respect the hundred-year-old heritage of the site whilst introducing innovative retail, culture and hospitality offers has been an exciting opportunity."
