Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has unveiled plans for a new National Cathedral of Ghana designed by renowned British-Ghanaian architect David Adjaye. The project was announced in a ceremony commemorating the West African nation's 61st year of independence, and the new multi-faith place of worship is set to be one of the country's preeminent cultural landmarks.

The National Cathedral of Ghana has been conceived within 14 acres of landscaped gardens next to Osu Cemetery in Accra, Ghana's capital and largest city. It will devote space to a number of chapels, a baptistery, a 5,000-seat auditorium spanning two levels, a grand central hall, a music school, an art gallery and shop, and several multi-use spaces.

"The Cathedral will address the missing link in our nation's architecture by providing a Church of national purpose," said President Akufo-Addo. "It will be an inter-denominational house of worship and prayer, as well as serve as the venue for formal state occasions of a religious nature, such as presidential inaugurations, state funerals and national thanksgiving services."

A grand staircase leads from the gardens to the building, which features a concave roof and a timber-clad entryway. Adjaye plans to commission acclaimed Ghanaian and African artists to fit the interiors with special adornments and furnishings.

"It is an immense honour to be granted the opportunity to contribute something of this scale and important to my home country," said Adjaye. "I have sought to craft a building that not only understands its landscape but one that will be unique to Accra and the Ghanaian Nation."
