The first phase of the largest regeneration scheme in Wales is set to begin in September. Local development firm Rightacres has employed the expertise of multi-disciplinary practice Benoy to design the 2.5 million-square-foot Central Quay development, which will revitalize the Brains Brewery in the heart of Cardiff, the Welsh capital.

Running along the River Taff, the mixed-use project will knit together a campus replete with co-working, education and residential space. The development will feature 1,000 apartments, 1.5 million square feet of new office space, and a waterfront plaza offering expansive food and beverage options, all situated amid the original 19th century brewhouse and Brains-branded chimney.

"Our client's ambition to bring together existing land, buildings and infrastructure enabled Benoy to create not only a strong identity, but also a real sense of place at the heart of a practical and forward-thinking masterplan," said Jamie Webb, director, Benoy. "The vision is to create a truly mixed-use place, engaging the city with the River Taff and its heart, bringing the Brains Brewery complex back to life around a fantastic new public square."

Cardiff Metropolitan University has expressed interest in locating its School of Technologies at Central Quay, another boon for the site that could bring 2,000 students to the district by 2023.
