Global design practice Benoy has been selected winner in a design competition for the Yuqiao Science Innovation Centre in Shanghai. Working with developer Shanghai Lujiazui Group Company, the scheme for the development is spread over three plots and connected by a system of suspended pedestrian walkways.

"It is the government's intention to transform Shanghai into a world-class city by 2040," said Benoy Director and Lead Designer Qin Pang. "With that in mind, we have ensured the design of Yuqiao Science Innovation Centre will allow the development to be seen as an important addition and landmark for scientific development in Shanghai."

The project has been devised for a site within the first zone of the World Expo Park of China, a pilot free-trade zone in the city. The Expo Qiantan area, an emerging public service centre, sits to the west, while the eastern border is defined by Zhangjiang Technology City. The development will be serviced by Metro line 11, providing a direct link to the city.

Benoy's winning submission puts plazas at each main connection point as a buffer and gathering point for the confluence of retail and commercial space. An 'Artificial Intelligence Park' will be integrated with research and commercial facilities, including additional retail, dedicated office space and serviced apartments.

"Our design has balanced the needs of the growing business community with the vision to create a world-leading science innovation centre," said Pang. "We have worked to integrate each of the components seamlessly so the centre will be a place to bring differing user groups together."
