Quebec architects Saucier + Perrotte Architects and GLCRM & Associates Architects have been unanimously chosen as the winning team in a design competition launched in June 2017 for a revitalized Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. The architectural scheme will devote more space to house a growing collection and attendance, with the museum seeing a record 600,000 visitors last year.

The proposal strengthens the connection between the museum and the Place des Festivals via a new light-filled expansion. The main floor is articulated by an angular overhang that shelters a museum square. On the second floor, a large window highlights a double-height restaurant space that opens onto an outdoor terrace. The building's upper envelope will employ a series of folded metal blades that filter natural light and expose interior spaces.

"The MAC renovation and expansion project will clearly highlight the Museum's presence on the Place des Arts site and will vastly enhance its contribution to the cultural prosperity of the Quartier des spectacles," said Gilles Saucier, Architect, Head Designer. "Complementing the existing building erected in the 1990s, the new MAC will adopt a resolutely contemporary expression of openness, transparency and a sculptural approach adapted to its unique urban context."

Expected to begin construction in spring 2019 and open in fall 2021, the finished modernization will boast nearly 100 percent more exhibition spaces and rooms, a completely redesigned lobby and circulation areas, expanded educational areas, and a new bookstore and coffee shop.
