A mixed-use development designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill is taking shape in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighbourhood on the site of the former Children's Memorial Hospital. The 1.1 million-square-foot project is being spearheaded by Hines and McCaffery Interests, who have envisioned a new nexus for the community, to be accomplished through a diversity of uses.

The Lincoln Common is bordered by Fullerton Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Orchard Street and Halsted Street, and reanimates a multi-faceted site with over 100,000 square feet of retail space, two 20-storey residential towers, a five-storey boutique office building, and over 68,000 square feet of open space. The residential plan includes 540 luxury apartment units and 40 condominiums.

The project preserves and restores the 1925-built White Elephant Building and the 1931-built Laundry Building and Boiler House. A portico framing the entrance to the 1926 Martha Wilson Building is also being integrated into the development.

The two residential towers and office block are well above grade, demonstrating the imminent impact of the development. As they near topping off, glazing has been installed on the tallest residential tower.
