Eighteen months since our last update, and progress at the site of One Vanderbilt in Midtown Manhattan has evolved significantly, the 431-metre supertall tower now a dominating presence alongside Grand Central Station. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates for SL Green, the 65-storey mixed-use high-rise will place 45 floors of state-of-the-art office space above a multi-storey retail podium, the well-situated development to connect directly to the subway and Metro-North.

Built adjacent to Grand Central Station, the project includes over $200 million worth of station improvements, adding capacity for more than 65,000 passengers. Viewed above, One Vanderbilt's base will include space for a public plaza, which, in addition to the direct connection to the Grand Central, will offer a place to stop and get one's bearings after emerging from the subway.

Looking up, while it will yet be some time before One Vanderbilt reaches its full height, passersby can catch a glimpse of the cladding application work now underway. Inspired in equal parts by the city's mix of traditional and modern architecture, the face of the tower will be clad in a variety of materials, including glazing, spandrel, and metal accents.

Glimpsed from 5th Ave, One Vanderbilt's signature tapered silhouette can already be made out, its shifting volumes and textures designed to evoke the shapes and forms that have made Manhattan one of the world's most iconic cities, for among many things, its eclectic collection of architectural marvels - the nearby Chrysler Building be no exception.

SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
