One year since our last update, and progress at the 438-metre supertall 111 West 57th Street by JDS Development and SHoP Architects has moved ahead significantly. The sculptural, 80-storey tower has now risen high into the Midtown skyline, its signature curve now a defining feature of the neighbourhood.

Located at the base of Central Park, this skinny, supertall, luxury tower will be home to just 60 residents, many of its generously-sized suites to feature multi-storey and/or full-floor layouts. Part of a growing trend in New York, the rise of the tall, skinny, luxury tower has become ubiquitous throughout much of Manhattan, though Midtown appears to be the mainstay for projects of this type.

Wedged onto a narrow, 18-metre lot, and placed atop the historic, 1925 Steinway Hall, the tower has been fronted with a beautiful, terra cotta facade reminiscent of both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods that were popular during the early decades of the 20th century. Featuring fine lines and Gothic tracery, the exterior of the tower will truly be something to behold.

While a handful of urban planners and others have criticized this supertall/luxury trend, for both its unmitigated largesse, and the fact that such a massive structure could, if otherwise purposed, house hundreds (not mere dozens) of people, it is undeniable that the finished products are often spectacles unto themselves. Tall, slender, glittering beacons of capitalism, towers such as these hold a special place - exactly what this is dependent upon one's political views.

SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
