Design team COBE and DISSING+WEITLING architecture have realized Køge Nord Station, a striking new transportation hub for Greater Copenhagen that features a sinuous pedestrian bridge.
One of the signature elements of the completed project is a 225-metre-long footbridge that provides easy access to the new double-track high-speed rail line between Copenhagen and the city of Ringsted. The footbridge, elevated above the Køge Bugt Highway, links the line to existing commuter S-train service.
"Together, we have designed a landmark for the development that the city of Køge is currently undergoing. A development driven by innovation, pioneering spirit and a bold outlook that is embodied by the station bridge and the related facilities," said Dan Stubbergaard, architect and founder of COBE. "The bridge is also a new architectural attraction for the area; a long, spectacular steel snake sinuously extending above the railway lines and offering the users a magnificent panoramic view of the cultural landscape."
Jesper B. Henriksen, architect and partner at DISSING+WEITLING architecture, says the warm wood materials inside the bridge invite and welcome commuters, while the sharp aluminum exterior provides contrast to that experience.
An international design competition for the development was announced in 2014. A total of 38 teams from Japan, the United States and seven European Union nations submitted bids for the project.
Køge Nord Station was christened by Crown Prince Frederik at opening celebrations on May 31. Køge Nord Station is scheduled to operate six trains every hour in each direction on the S-train line and three regional trains an hour in each direction. Approximately 90,000 commuters will pass through the transit hub every day.
