Aéroports de Montréal is opening a new $50 million Connection Centre this week to increase capacity of YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport. The facility is designed to boost the seat occupancy rate of aircraft, resulting in new and improved direct connections from Montréal around the world.
The new building reinforces Montréal-Trudeau International Airport as a hub for international air traffic. The airport has experienced steady growth in the number of passengers arriving and departing in recent years. Almost one million connecting passengers will use the Connection Centre as a gateway overseas to countries like China, Turkey and Japan. To date, the airport provides service to 152 destinations, 90 of which are outside of Canada.
"We are extremely pleased to announce the commissioning of our new centre, which is fully dedicated to connecting passengers and represents an important driver for the development of YUL's air service," said Philippe Rainville, President and CEO of Aéroports de Montréal. "With this new state-of-the-art facility, YUL is increasingly becoming a strategic location for transiting passengers. Montréal-Trudeau is world-renowned for the efficiency of its winter operations which, combined with its geographical position, already give it a competitive advantage."
The facade of the building reinterprets the Canadian Shield landscape as depicted from above. Atlantic Black granite flooring and birch wood panels comprise the distinctly Canadian material palette. A large green wall inside and a solar wall on the south facade work in tandem to regulate temperature and passenger comfort.
The Connection Centre, which was fully funded by the local airport authority Aéroports de Montréal, will open on December 11. A second phase will be completed by the end of summer 2020.
