A new OMA-designed project now under construction will succeed the 255-metre-high Toranomon Hills as Tokyo's tallest building, excluding the city's two observation towers. Forming part of the same complex as the current title holder, the 51-storey Toranomon Hills Station Tower will rise to a height of 265 metres.

Groundwork on the skyscraper began in late November according to Japan Property Central. When complete, the 250,000-square-metre building will contain office space, a hotel, and retail. A 12-storey building located behind will include apartments on the lower floors and commercial space above.

The Global Business Hub at Toranomon Hills is being developed by Mori Building. Two additional towers, a 220-metre-tall residential building and an 185-metre-tall office building, are in advanced stages of construction.

The complex will be connected to a new station along the Hibuya Subway Line, scheduled to open in June 2020. The entire redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2023.

"Toranomon Hills Station Tower serves as a key node that connects the new station to the other towers and the surrounding district," said Shohei Shigematsu, lead designer of the project. "The axis of activity is designed to run through the base, extending vertically to wrap the tower; communicating the activity of the complex at an urban scale."
