One of the world's most recognizable landmarks has begun a two-year renovation. The iconic Sydney Opera House will receive a $150 million AUD retrofit by ARM Architecture, Schuler Shook and Müller-BBM, who will upgrade the acoustics of the performance hall and improve sightlines for the audience.

The largest upgrade carried out on the building since its inauguration in 1973, the project will transform the venue in time for its 50th anniversary in 2023. A new acoustic ceiling and bespoke acoustic reflectors will join a 3D surround-sound system to amplify performances in the concert hall.

In addition to a new lift and passageway to improve accessibility, the plan also calls for new automated drapes, a flying lighting system and a lowered stage to create a more intimate experience.

ARM Architecture was awarded the contract for the renewal in 2015. The upgrade forms part of a 10-year revitalization scheme for the Sydney Opera House that began in 2013.
