American studio wHY Architecture has revealed visuals for a new opera house in the Russian city of Perm. To be located near the Kama River, the Tchaikovsky Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre received approval from the local city council, and the new facility forms the backbone of a cultural revitalization initiative.

The curvilinear design of the building incorporates the geography of the river and the landscape. The design strategy points to creating an open and porous experience, aided by large vertical expanses of glass, that allow onlookers to peek into the common spaces.

The undulating roofline also evokes the movement of the dancers that will perform within the venue, while copper-coloured architectural features draw on the legacy of copper mining in the region. Meanwhile, a proposed civic square connecting to the neighbouring park invites outdoor discovery.
