The crane has been erected for a 12-storey boutique office building in Chicago's River North neighbourhood. 448 LaSalle by Midwest Property Group features a sleek rectilinear design from Lamar Johnson Collaborative, providing a modern counterpoint to the historic Veseman Building next door.
The under-construction building replaces a surface parking lot at the corner of LaSalle and Illinois. Upon completion, the project will include ground-floor retail, 40 bicycle spaces, but zero parking stalls for vehicles. Roof-level amenities include an outdoor terrace, fitness centre, lounge, great room, and kitchen.
The facade will be composed of glass, metal spandrel panels and a grid of mullions, lending a simple yet refined overall aesthetic. Expansive windows ensure a flood of natural light through the interiors, which embrace an open-concept, loft-style atmosphere.
Developer CA Ventures announced last month that they have leased approximately 60,000 square feet across five floors. Shared workplace provider WeWork has also signed a deal for 63,000 square feet of space on the building's upper four floors.
With the crane installed, workers have begun assembling the foundation and below-grade levels. Given the shallow depth of the excavation, the project should begin showing itself above grade within weeks.
