A time-lapse video released by EarthCam documents the construction of the seven-storey, 824,000-square-foot new Stanford Hospital in Stanford, California. Forming a major element of the Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, the new hospital opened its doors in November 2019.
Approximately 200 patients were safely transferred from the existing hospital at 300 Pasteur Drive across a skybridge connected to the new facility. The new hospital concludes over a decade of planning and construction. It includes 368 private rooms and 20 state-of-the-art operating suites. Its emergency department is over twice the size of its predecessor's. It also features the only Level 1 trauma centre between San Francisco and San Jose.
The new Stanford Hospital was designed by internationally recognized firm Rafael Viñoly Architects, who adopted a modular plan that can be adapted and expanded incrementally. The universal module measures roughly 36 by 36 metres, and is deployed in a checkerboard pattern to produce a floor plan in which hospital functions are alternated with open spaces. Emergency, imaging and interventional departments on the lower floors are organized around an atrium and entry plaza. On upper floors, nursing areas are provided with views of rooftop gardens.
The middle zone includes a combination of roof gardens and non-clinical programs. The third floor garden level surmounts the building's large second storey, and features a cafeteria, restaurant, conference centre, staff lockers and a lounge area.
