Trying to avoid the appearance / implication of personally supporting the conservative minority by way of absenteeism?

yeah... if one is opposed to the Conservatives, doesn't make sense to vote for the Liberals since they will just support the Conservatives anyway,k as they have done for years. Ignatieff will be more likely to support Harper as PM than Layton. Voting Liberal is basically saying Harper should be PM. If you want Harper, why not just vote Conservative? If not, just vote NDP. Voting Liberal makes no sense.

Voting Liberal makes a lot of sense if your main issue with the Conservatives is not their economic policy - which is similar to the Liberals - but their social policy.

The only reason I won't support the Conservativs is their anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-women, pro-crime pro-gun policies. Voting Liberal solves all that without having to resort to socialist fiscal policy.

Not that the Conservatives would have a chance in my riding; they'll have done well to stay ahead of the Greens.

That was ridiculous - just where the heck was Iggy for all those votes?

Or, in Iggy's case, by not showing up 70% of the time.

For the record, that number was made up. The actual number is 59%, which is not great.

The last two years, Iggy has been touring the country working on his stumping skills. He's gotten better, but he's not a natural politician.

I may end up voting Liberal, but I'm having a very hard time with that. The only reason I'd probably end up voting for them is because I wouldn't vote for the conservatives, even though I think their platform is actually the most sound this time around. "We will give you XYZ... when we balance the budget." These are non-promises, but such fiscal prudence may be what Canada needs at this time. However, I don't like their stances on certain non-financial issues, which is why I won't vote for them.

You may complain about the Conservative attacks on Iggy. However, those attack ads don't actually seem that bad to me, and I generally don't like attack ads. Iggy comes off as being obnoxious and elitist, and the Conservatives are merely highlighting that. That's the problem for the Liberals. That attitude that Iggy was an obnoxious elitist that was parachuted in is shared by both the right and the left. Remember, the reason why Stephan Dion won the Liberal leadership race last time was because so many Liberal Party members just didn't want Iggy as their leader.

Anti-immigrant? Tell me why so many of their supporters are people born outside of Canada?

Anti-gay? Conservatives don't hate gay people. We just believe in traditional marriage. There's a big difference. I don't care who you go to bed with.

Anti-women? I don't know where you got that idea but you couldn't be further from the truth. Women have just as much place in society as men.

Pro-Crime? I think you have them mixed up with the NDP.

As for the gun policy, it's not as if they'd allow anyone to legally purchase a firearm. There would be background checks. There are pros and cons to having guns. If everyone was armed, those that would normally use their guns for criminal purposes would most likely reconsider harming another human being, because we all know criminals are cowards and are easily spooked. The bad side of the coin is that some people would abuse their right to carry a gun. Overall though, I don't think crime would go up.

There is no shortage of socially conservative members in the Liberal caucus. NDP would be a better opposition.

Because Conservatives have been pandering to immigrants - Conservatives have made enough anti-immigrant statements over the years. They've been a lot quieter about it in the last few years - but prominent conservative Rob Ford was quite clear on the issue recently.

Buit you do care who peole marry. That's hateful and bigoted. Such extreme prejudice should put people in jail, not in public office.

Are you kidding me? And yet Conservatives want to ban abortion, and promote policies that keep women out of the workplace.

Pro-Crime? I think you have them mixed up with the NDP.
And yet Conservatives want to put more guns in society, and want to put more people in prison, which only serves to increase the crime rates. And they keep cutting funding to crime prevention programs. Either the people doing this are really, really, really stupid - or they are pro-crime. I confess I may be wrong and they are not pro-crime, and are just really, really, really stupid.

If everyone was armed, those that would normally use their guns for criminal purposes would most likely reconsider harming another human being, because we all know criminals are cowards and are easily spooked.
That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard. This is the kind of thinking that get's people killed - that's get RCMP killed ... most RCMP officers who have been shot in the last few years, have been shot with the kind of guns the Tories are trying to not licence.

LOL. nfitz, check out the "please do not vote conservative" thread...

Do you think the Liberals or NDP care anymore about immigrants than the Conservatives? They're all the same. They'll pander to them if it helps get them elected. They're all selfish.

No, I don't care if gay people get married. I just don't agree with gay marriage. I think marriage should be between a man and a woman, but it doesn't personally bother me or effect my life if two gay people wed.

Banning abortion is bad? So you favour murder? If a female gets pregnant by accident (birth control didn't work) then she should take responsibility for her actions as well as the guy who participated. Why should we offer mulligans?

How do you know that having more guns in society and putting more people in jail would increase crime rates? Can you prove it? Having more guns could have the opposite effect. If everyone was armed, the cowards who illegally have obtained guns would probably be too afraid to ever draw their weapon because there would be a 50/50 chance that they'd be killed. They wouldn't have the advantage they have now over Joe Schmoe.

How is my last sentence absurd? What is there to stop a thug from pulling out his gun and shooting you? He's 99.99% positive that you don't have a gun. The ball is in his court. You can't defend yourself. If everyone had a weapon then you better believe Holmes is going to reconsider his actions because you could just as easily murk him. Criminals that carry guns are pussies. That is why they carry guns and generally use numbers to overwhelm their victims.

I just don't agree with gay marriage.
The problem isn't with those that disagree with it. It's with those that try and stop other people doing it. Those people are bigots. And there are far too many Conservatives MPs who fall into that category.

Bigots should not be in parliament.

Are you kidding me? I had no idea that anyone in Toronto was so backwards to make such a silly argument. Your misogyny is shameful.

Your entire post is absurd. Pro-crime, pro-hate, anti-woman. It represents everything that is wrong with the Conservative party.

Hmm ... new member. Is this another of those paid Conservative party hacks? I guess the Conservatives "promises" to not touch the abortion laws are another lie.

How is that a misogynist statement? I said both the female and male should take responsibility for their actions. And I'm the one who is backwards? Yeah, let's just go ahead and kill helpless babies, oh wait, they're nothing but a bunch of molecules while in the womb, right? People know the risks of sexual intercourse.

You don't get out much, do you?
