A foreman(?) told me that because of the soil conditions they will not be using caissons, but piles, driven down to bedrock. After I left I started wondering
1) Is the soil so loose that they can't use caissons, or so loose as to allow them to use piles ?
2) Are these friction piles, just as long as they can go, or are they supporting the building on the piles sitting on the bedrock ?

Pilings - not caissons - for this building.

Support is from friction on the vertical surfaces.

Pilings are completed - starting work on the soil retention before the excavate the tops of the pilings and build a matt on top of them.
