The development craze reshaping New York City is reaching all-time highs, with luxurious units rising in towers across Manhattan's most prestigious areas. However, it is along 57th street, just south of Central Park, that the city's future tallest buildings are currently being constructed. At 111 West 57th Street, the tower of the same name designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development will be one of the tallest on the row by the time it is complete in 2018.

At 438 metres in height, the 80-storey structure will become yet another symbol of the city's prosperity, with a total of 60 residential units selling for up to $100 million. The development includes Steinway Hall, which will be converted into apartments. Built in 1925, this heritage structure will be partially dismantled in order to make room for the new skyscraper. The slender structure will boast an impressively small 18-metre-wide footprint along 57th Street, where the first levels of the building will be dedicated to retail.

While the northern facade will rise mostly uninterrupted from street level to the pinnacle of the building, the southern facade will boast a series of setbacks, gradually reducing the surface of the floor plates as well as the shade cast by the tower. The exterior walls will consist of a dark-toned glass curtain wall covered by a terra cotta and bronze 'net'.

The interiors are being designed by Studio Sofield, renowned for their work within the most prestigious spaces in the United States and London. Meanwhile, construction is progressing on the tower's foundations, which are getting closer to street level as seen in the photo below, posted by one of our Forum members.
