The 81-storey, 249-metre Infinity skyscraper has been the tallest building in the Australian city of Brisbane since the residential tower was completed in 2014. But as the nation's hot real estate market continues to supply urban areas with major building projects, Infinity's record height has already been overtaken by another development. Located in Brisbane's central business district, 1 William Street is a commercial office tower reaching a height of 260 metres.
Built by Cbus Property, the development contains 75,000 square metres of net lettable space and 46 levels of offices to be occupied by over 5,000 Queensland government employees.Covering an entire city block, the property previously served as a government parking lot. In addition to the main office program, over 1,000 square metres of retail will animate the space around the tower.
Landscaping is provided throughout the project in the form of subtropical botanical gardens and roof terracing. The building's slanted crown and modern curtain wall cladding system evoke a sense of renewal for what has traditionally been an underutilized section of the downtown core. It is hoped that 1 William Street will spur development in the Government Administrative Precinct, where Queensland's Legislative Assembly, Parliament House, resides.
Woods Bagot's design is on full display in photos captured by Forum contributor Cadillac, which show that most of the building is now covered in dark glazing, while the pinnacle awaits enclosure. Now the tallest building in the city, it will retain that distinction until the Brisbane Skytower knocks it out of first place. 1 William Street should be fully occupied by 2017.
