Our last front page photo update on Boston's Avalon North Station showed the 38-storey building after reaching its apex. The luxury apartment tower by Avalonbay Communities Inc., which has climbed to a height of 127 metres (415 feet), is one of Boston's most significant new additions.

The $250 million project will feature an expansive collection of amenities for residents. A fitness centre will include top-of-the-line exercise equipment and a rooftop terrace will serve as a tranquil communal space. Looking at the big picture, a pedestrian arcade lined with retail and restaurants will rest between Nashua Street and Causeway Street, providing a vibrant public amenity to the neighbourhood.

The development is located next to TD Garden, home of the Bruins and Celtics professional hockey and basketball teams. The arena is situated directly above North Station, a major transportation hub serving MBTA Commuter Rail, subway and Amtrak Downeaster trains. Avalon North Station residents will enjoy access to this community amenity, improvements to the pedestrian realm, and an enhanced landscaping program in the immediate area.

The project will ultimately house 503 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment units in a CBT Architects-designed structure of glass and precast. The crane has been removed, as work on the exterior fills in exposed gaps in the facade. Occupancy should begin in late 2016, with the tower officially complete in 2017.
