Following the recent design reveal of the first Tokyo project for Dutch architecture firm OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), German practice Ingenhoven Architects has unveiled their plans for the other two buildings in the three-tower complex. The Toranomon area is being developed into a new business and lifestyle precinct by Mori Building, which has already built one skyscraper in the immediate vicinity.

A residential tower of 220 metres will accompany a 185-metre office building. Planted pedestrian decks cascade downwards and continue the natural language of the Atago Shrine's surrounding gardens. Rooftop greenery will enhance the environmental performance of the buildings by minimizing the urban heat island effect.

The envelopes of both towers are formed by a series of horizontal ledges. Not only do these appendages help shade the glazed facade of the buildings, they appropriately balance energy efficiency with the desire for adequate sunlight. The decks and terraces created by these ledges serve as public landscaped areas for recreation and relaxation. Multiple waterfalls will also be sprinkled throughout the landscape to create a stimulating experience of colour, sound, and fragrance when combined with the neighbouring greenery.

The international hub for business will implement the shared vision of a "vertical garden city" expressed by Mori Building and Ingenhoven Architects. This will be achieved through the installation of several environmentally friendly systems, including rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and high-efficiency lighting. While these two towers are scheduled for 2019 completion, the OMA-designed building will open three years later.
