Six months after Canvar's AC Marriott project received its crane, construction on the 37-storey Montreal building has reached ground level. Located at René-Lévesque Boulevard and Jeanne-Mance Street, the 12 hotel floors of the tower will be operated under the banner of AC Hotels, a Marriott-owned brand with establishments across Europe.
It was announced in 2013 that AC Hotels would extend its footing to North America, with the first building in New Orleans. The brand is now testing the waters north of the border, with the Montreal project being Canada's first taste of the chain's hospitality experience.
Rental apartments will be located above the first dozen hotel levels which protrude from the base of the tower. A glazed enclosure perched atop the podium houses some of the amenities in the Geiger Huot Architectes-designed building, including a gym and a pool. A copper-hued vertical fin extends from the building's lower floors to the top, where it forms an overhanging crown holding the AC logo.
New construction photos from the site show a fresh concrete pour waiting to settle, as rebar pokes out of the future slab. Two tower cranes, a cement mixer and a throng of construction workers make for a busy and exciting scene. It will be a much different view in a couple of years, when the tower begins welcoming guests and contributes to the round-the-clock vibrancy of Downtown Montreal.
