A quick comment on this revived thread: photos like the ones back there of the residential streets remind me what a fantastic housing vernacular there is in urban Southern Ontario; not so much the random Victoriana which could be anywhere in North America but the bay-and-gable and similar houses which are unmistakably ours. I don't know of a housing type anywhere in the world I like better.

This commercial patio without a fence to separate it from the sidewalk is great. If only more patios were like this.

I think the fence is required for serving alcohol under our still stuffy liquor laws, so a cafe doesn't need one. Otherwise, why does Starbucks and Second Cup fence their patios, if only to discourage non-customers from sitting down.

Starbucks has now discovered Locke St and are preparing to open soon. Perhaps surprisingly, it will be the first Starbucks in the lower city, which has been completely dominated by Tim Horton's, which might not be surprising.

On Friday four of us drove to Hamilton for the opening of our friend Andrew McPhail's new show Lit at transit gallery ( 230 Locke ).

After the opening we had dinner at Bar on Locke ( pictured in the photo thread ), an old diner that's got pretty good food, a decent wine list, cheerful waitresses and friendly atmosphere.
